Before we look at the text of 1 John 2:1-2, and look carefully at the foundation for the forgiveness and assurance of believers, it is vital that we remember the context of what has gone before.  Beginning in verse 5 of chapter 1, John has stressed that God is perfect light, and that no man can attain to the perfection that God demands.  Not even truly saved people can attain to such lofty spiritual heights.  Therefore, to claim to walk with Him, while in reality you are walking in darkness is to be a hypocrite, lying to thers about the reality of your own heart (1:6).  Though believers will not walk in perfection, as God is perfect, their lives will be changed to reflect the light of God Himself.  Coming to verse 8 you find that to claim to have no sin is a self-deception (1:8).  Everyone who is honest with his or her life will admit that he or she fails to live up to the standard of perfect holiness required by a perfectly holy God.  And again, to say that we have not sinned (1:10), is ultimately to call God a liar.  Because all mankind . . . still sin, John has, in verse 9, given believers instruction in what to do when personal sin manifests itself to us.  Coming to the very first part ot 2:1, we are then told that it is God's desire that we sin not.  Knowing that this goal will not be reach by sinful men, the Lord, through John gives us great hope in that Jesus is our Lawyer, our Law-keeper, and our Lamb.

I.  Jesus is our Lawyer.  (1 John 2:1)

"But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."  (See also Romans 8:26-34)
